Donations are not always about money
- Housing We are very keen to hear from anyone with a spare room or other generous housing options.
- Jobs wanted Assistance with jobs through your contacts – full-time, part-time or casual.
- Groceries Food items such as eggs, sugar, flour, cooking oil. Cans of tomatoes, fruit, tuna, red kidney beans, corn & peas. Long life milk, tea and coffee, cheese biscuits, noodles, honey, dates, salt & pepper and spices – coriander, ginger & cinnamon. Shampoo, conditioner, shaving cream & toothpaste. Cleaning items such as washing powder, dishwashing & other cleaning detergents and gladwrap, tinfoil and pegs. Disposable nappies, of all sizes and wipes are also required, as many families have young children.
- Furniture and household items When demand and storage allows, we require beds, microwaves, refrigerators, washing machines, kitchen pots, pans and utensils, laptops and LED/LCD TVs.
- Gift vouchers These allow people some independence to buy things they really want and need from major stores such as Coles, Woolworths, Big W and Kmart.
- Travel and phone cards MYKI or mobile phone credit are essential for functioning in the community.

Volunteer
What you can do
- Offer support and friendship – in people’s homes and in the community
- Collect or deliver gifts of food and material aid
- Help with housing applications and inspections
- Offer accommodation – short or long term
- Give support after release from detention
- Transport to activities or appointments – occasional or regular
Advocacy
Keep up to date with what is happening. Read the news we have from direct contact with asylum seekers and sign up to receive our BASP newsletter. Write to your local member of Parliament (or call in and see them) and ask for a more humane approach to asylum seekers. Here are some letter writing suggestions to get you started.
Friendship through teaching English
Volunteer for our Friendship through teaching English program, providing friendship and support to an asylum seeker family along with personalised assistance in everyday English. Help families settle in their Australian community by exploring local facilities and services together. Volunteers visit an assigned family once a week to offer friendship and support.
