What happens to asylum seekers now the government has changed?

Prime Minister Elect Tony Abbott spoke to 2UE radio today, to re-state the message of what happens to asylum seekers arriving by boat.

His key messages were:

– No person arriving by boat will be offered permanent residency in Australia
– The 30,000 people currently waiting for their claims to be processed in Australia will be offered Temporary Protection Visas only
– Boats arriving from Indonesia will be turned back “if safe to do so”
– The outgoing government’s “PNG Solution” will remain in place and asylum seekers will continue to be processed offshore on Manus Island
