Government refuses to comment on whether they paid people smugglers to turn around

“Prime Minister Tony Abbott has repeatedly dodged new questions about whether Australian officials paid people smugglers thousands of dollars to return 65 asylum seekers to Indonesia, only saying that his government is “prepared to do what is necessary to keep the boats stopped”.” Mr Abbott has also refused to comment on whether it would be appropriate for Australia to do so, even after the United Nations confirmed they have reports from asylum seekers that they saw the payments happen.
