Discussion Night Q&A – why is there an increase in Vietnamese arrivals into Australia?

We’re starting our Q&A posts with this question because it was one we couldn’t answer on the night! We’ve looked it up since. Reports from several news agencies indicate that the Vietnamese government is cracking down much more harshly on its critics within the Vietnamese people. Dissidents, particularly journalists and bloggers, are being persecuted.

In addition, Christians and Buddhists appear to be being targeted.

Almost 500 Vietnamese asylum seekers have arrived in Australia this year.
