Immigration Minister Peter Dutton has announced to News Corp that no children are now being held in detention. Front pages of the Herald Sun and the Daily Telegraph have carried the story that all kids have been released from detention. However the Guardian is reporting that the claim has only been made because the immigration department has re-classified some sections of detention centres as “community detention”.
The Guardian reports:
“As an example, families with children in “held detention” in the “family compound” of Villawood detention centre were told by letter on Friday that their detention was now classified as “community detention”.
They have been “released” from detention without moving.”
